The idea :

The Help Exchange is a type of travel. It is based on an exchange between backpackers and individuals or organizations that are looking for help daily, all around the world. The backpacker offers his help in exchange for free accomodation and sometimes food. Exchanges are very varied. It can be in a hostel, in an NGO, in schools, in farms, on boats, but also in people's houses to look after their children or their pets, help gardening, help cooking or even help them to build their houses.

Le Help Exchange est une façon différente de voyager. Elle se base sur l'idée d'un échange entre des voyageurs et des organisations ou des personnes aillant besoin d'aide au quotidien, partout dans le monde. Le voyageur offre son aide et il reçoit en retour un hébergement gratuit et parfois des repas. Les expériences sont très variées. L'échange peut se faire en auberge de jeunesse, dans une ONG, dans des écoles, dans des fermes, sur des bateaux, mais aussi chez des particuliers pour garder leurs enfants, s'occuper d'animaux, du jardin, les aider à faire la cuisine ou à construire leur maison.

How I discovered HelpX:

In 2016, I was in Melbourne, Australia. I was working for a family as an Au Pair. It was the 3rd time I was an Au Pair to travel and I realised I've had enough of it. I met a French girl, and we went for a walk in the mountains one day. She talked to me about an original and enriching way of travelling. Sleeping and eating in people's home, in exchange of a few hours "of work" per day. I loved the idea right away. I was already doing this as an Au Pair, but I had enough of looking after children. En 2016, j'étais à Melbourne en Australie. Je travaillais en tant que Fille au Pair pour une famille. C'était pour moi la 3ème fois que je voyageais de cette façon et je réalisais que je commençais à en avoir assez. J'ai rencontré une Française et on est partie se balader dans les montagnes un jour. Elle a commencé à me parler d'une façon de voyager originale et super enrichissante. Aller chez des gens gratuitement, manger et dormir chez eux, en échange de quelques heures de "travail" par jour. J'ai tout de suite accrochée à l'idée. Je faisais déjà ça en tant que fille Au Pair, mais j'en avais assez de garder des enfants, j'avais besoin de faire autre chose, tout en continuant de voyager. How it works :
There are actually several websites about exchanges in the world : helpx.net, workaway.info, worldpackers.com, hippohelp.com, etc...
People write their profil, what kind of help they need, how many hours of ~~work~~ help a day, what they can offer in exchange. And travellers do the same, write their skills or what they are looking for in the exchange. It is actually really easy to use, but all the websites are in english, so you need basic understanding of the language. Some websites are for free, some are not.

Il y a en réalité plusieurs sites internet qui proposent ces échanges : helpx.net, workaway.info, worldpackers.com, hippohelp.com, etc...
Les gens écrivent leur profil, le genre d'aide dont ils ont besoin, le nombres d'heure ~~de travail~~ d'aide par jour, ce qu'ils offrent en échange. Et les voyageurs font la même chose, décrivent leur compétences ou ce qu'ils recherchent comme échange. C'est très simple d'utilisation, mais tous les sites sont en anglais, alors cela demande une certaine compréhension de la langue. Certains des sites sont gratuit d'autres, non.

Why I love it :
The first reason, I have to admit, is that HelpX is a cheap way of travelling everywhere in the world. I can travel for a long period of time, without being worried about the price of my accomodation. (Well, five stars hotels are not really my cup of tea anyway.)
The second reason is that it allows me to discover people's life and their culture from the inside. I love seeing how people live in other countries. I can cook with them. I can see what they watch on TV or what games they play with their kids. I also love to observe the relations between the members of the family. See how they sometimes work together, how they help or support each other.

As a guest, you have to be open minded, flexible and respectful. Everybody lives differently and you have to accept it. You live with them and have to follow their rules, their schedules, their habits. You have to be aware that you'll never really know in advance who the people are. Some might do or say things that you don't always agree with. You have to keep it to yourself and try not to judge.

Most of the time, those people you meet will teach you a lot of different things, will shape your personality and make you grow.

For a lot of people, I'm on holidays. Yes, I'm in a foreign country, I don't have a job and I don't earn money. But I'm not really chilling out in the sun everyday. I have to earn my stay by helping around. I'm not a slave either. I chose to be there and I can leave whenever I want. My ~~work~~ help, is just not rewarded with money. I know it can sometimes shock people but it suits me down to the ground.
I obviously also do get my free time to go out, explore and do whatever I want to do.

Pourquoi j'adore ce concept :

La première raison, je dois bien l'avouer, c'est que le HelpX permet de voyager partout dans le monde à moindre frais. Je peux partir sur de longues périodes sans trop avoir à me soucier du prix de mon hébergement. De toute façon, les hotêls 5 étoiles, non merci, ce n'est pas pour moi.
La deuxième raison c'est que ça me permet de découvrir la vie des gens de l'intérieur. J'adore voir comment les gens vivent dans d'autres pays. Je cuisine avec eux, je regarde la télé avec eux, je joue avec leurs enfants. J'adore observer les relations entre les membres d'une famille, comment ils travaillent ensemble parfois, s'entraident et se soutiennent.

En tant qu'invité, on se doit d'être ouvert d'esprit, flexible et respectueux. Tout le monde vit différemment et il faut l'accepter. On vit avec eux, on suit donc leurs règles, leurs horaires, leurs habitudes. Il faut aussi être conscient qu'on ne peut pas réellement savoir à l'avance chez qui on va arriver. Certaines personnes peuvent faire des choses ou avoir des propos qu'on ne cautionne pas toujours. Il faut savoir prendre sur soi et essayer de ne pas juger.

La plupart du temps, ces gens qu'on rencontre nous apprennent des tas de choses, nous font grandir et nous construisent.

Pour beaucoup de gens, je suis en vacances. C'est vrai, je suis dans un pays étranger, je n'ai pas de travail et je ne gagne pas d'argent. Mais je ne me prélasse pas non plus tous les jours au bord d'une piscine. Je dois gagner mon droit à un toit au dessus de ma tête. Je ne suis pas non plus l'esclave de ces gens [n'est ce pas Daddy 😉]. J'ai choisis d'être là, et je peux m'en aller quand je veux. Mon ~~travail~~ aide, n'est juste pas récompensé par de l'argent, ce qui peut parfois choquer mais qui me convient très bien. J'ai aussi bien évidemment des jours de repos où je suis libre d'aller explorer les environs et faire ce qui me plait.
